Stock Market Update - Wed 27May09

The FTSE has a Directionless Session, Finishing Flat

The FTSE100 closed up 4 points at 4,416, whilst the FTSE 250 closed up 58 points at 7,588, and for those that are interested the FTSE Small Caps closed up 5 points at 2,255. The bigger blue chips were range-bound for the day, really, with the fairly buoyant travel and leisure companies, together with the supermarkets, helping offset some of the banks and miners' performance.

Over the pond, Wall Street got off to a fairly cautious start, with more concern over the fate of General Motors causing concern. Most US stocks were lower in morning trade, with data showing pre-owned home sales up 2.9% in April, which was as expected, but home prices had fallen in March. By the time London closed, the DJIA was down about 21 points at 8,452, whilst the S&P 500 was just about even at 910, and the Nasdaq was up around 11 points at 1,762.

FXLR Daily Roundup – 27th May 2009

Another long day in the Live Room. The all-day sessions are providing some decent feedback, with the chat all day being popular. Forex Market Update - London - Wed 27May09

FXLR - Forex Report - London Session

Sterling did well this morning, with a few tries at 1.60 finally seeing a breakthrough, with STG hitting a 7-month high. It was also up against the Euro. However, with the pound still around 30% weaker against the EUR, and 20% weaker against the USD coimpared to the highs reached 18 months ago, we could speculate that the good news isn't quite that good, and a correction could come later today or tomorrow.

The Yen crosses weren't as busy this morning. Both USD/JPY and EUR/USD are currently almost unchanged from early London session prices. Risk traders are returning, hence the softer USD, which can also be linked with an unwinding of long USD positions built up during the height of the financial crisis. It is reasonable to assume that these flows will thin out suggesting that the USD may start to react more directly to US fundamentals - back to the correction we expect.

This week the USD should find support on the solid results of yesterday's 2 yr auction. The result of the Treasury's 5yr auction should provide a key focus this afternoon. The EUR is likely to find incentive over the coming days from the approach of the ECB's June 4th policy meeting. The release of soft German lander CPI, which highlights the risk that German CPI, could stay close to zero for much of the remainder of the year - a scenario which could allow further ECB easing. On balance it seems likely that the ECB will retain a quiet stance, which could leave the EUR with a defensive tone over the coming week. News from France thsi morning showed French consumer confidence was up a little in May, whilst Italian consumer confidence was in-line with April data, but slightly below market estimates. Aside from the 5 yr auction, US home sales data will provide a focus this afternoon. A rise is expected in sales, but prices should be reported lower again.

Stock Market Update - Tues 19May09

The FTSE Closes Up - But Off its Session Highs

The headline shares closed up today, but off highs, as strong commercial property issues and the miners helping offset Marks & Spencer, who posted news of tumbling profits and a third cut off the dividend. Wall Street opened down, but soon turned up again, recovering nicely. The FTSE 100 closed up nearly 36 points at 4,482, whilst the FTSE 250 closed up 121 points at 7,698, and for those that are interested the FTSE Small Caps cl;osed up nearly 38 points at 2,279.

Over the pond, US stocks were flat in morning trade, recovering early losses, as data showed new housing starts and permits falling to record lows in April. House building activity in the US is now at its lowest level on record. By the time London closed, the DJIA was up just 44 points to 8,508, whilst the S&P 500 was up about 2 1/2 points at 912, and the Nasdaq just about even at 1,732.

Monday, 18 May 2009

Stock Market Update - Mon 18May09

FTSE Closes Up Nearly 100 Points

Headline shares recovered from a fairly slow start to eventually close sharply higher. Lloyds Banking Group lead the way after its Chairman announced he will resign after all the hassle and strife over the HBOS debacle. Wall Street opened positively as well, which helped London close up too. The FTSE 100 closed up 98points at 4,446, whilst the FTSE 250 closed up 103 points at 7,576, and for those that are interested the FTSE Small Caps closed up nearly 9 points at 2,241.

Over the pond, the US markets started positively, with sentiment riding higher ahead of builders-index data. News from DIY Group Lowe's was better-than-expected as well, which also boosted confidence. By the time London closed the DJIA was up some 163 points at 8,432, whilst the S&P 500 was up nearly 17 points at almost 900, and Nasdaq was up nearly 25 points at 1,705.

FXLR Daily Roundup – 18th May 2009

Not the best day, really, with an almost stagnant Live Room finally seeing one or two members take the Dollar-Yen trade for up to +40 pips. FXLR Daily Roundup – Wed 13th May 2009

Whilst a nice flag breakout on Cable Yen was missed by us, one or two of the room grabbed it for +100 pips. We were a little unlucky on the two trades called in the live room, but had we held things would have been different. But the Intra-day calls were excellent again. A couple of really good ones.

Stock Market Update - Wed 13May09

London - Not So Good - the FTSE ends session sharply lower

The FTSE 100 closed down 94 points at 4,331, whilst the FTSE 250 closed down 252 points at 7,371, and for those that are interested the FTSE Small Caps closed down nearly 95 points at 2,217.

The bigger blue chips ended the day sharply lower, today, despite the massive catering firm Compass Group impressing. Unfortunately the property and mining sectors wiped out any good feeling there. Wall Street opened down after some poor retail data as well. The Bank of England's quarterly inflation report also din't help. It basically said that the economy would be declining about 4.5% year-on-year by Q2 2009, adding that any recovery will take longer than expected (no suprise there, then).

Over the pond, Wall Street stocks were lower during its morning trade after news that retail sales were down in April, which was opposite to what had been expected. By the time London closed the DJIA was down 144 points at 8,325, whilst the S&P 500 was down 17 points at 891.27, and the Nasdaq down nearly 34 points at 1,682.

Stock Market Update - Tues 12May09

The FTSE has a mediocre day, ending the session slightly lower

The bigger blue chips gave the FTSE little reason to celebrate as the session ended down a little after some cautious trading. The banking and mining sectors performed poorly, with this knocking the positive effect from the hotel sector and food retailers. The FTSE 100 closed down about 10 points at 4,425, whilst the FTSE 250 closed up over 13 points at nearly 7,624, and for those that are interested the FTSE Small Caps closed down nearly 14 points at 2,312.

Over the pond, US stocks opened positive but then fell away as bearish sentiment outweighed the false optimism. General Motors and Ford are not helping anything at the moment, with poor news and feeling about the US car industry becoming a millstone. By the time London closed, the DJIA was down 18 points to 8401, the S&P500 down nearly 6 points 903, and the Nasdaq down nearly 22 points at 1,709.

Stock Market Update - Mon 11May09

Indicies Update - Mon 11May09

The Miners Weigh Down the FTSE

The biggest blue chips closed lower, with the miners hit by some broker downgrades. At Lonmin, the news of a rights issue and a half-year loss took its toll, wiping out gains from Centrica's news that it is to be taking a 20% stake in British Energy.

The FTSE 100 closed down 26 points at 4,435, whilst the FTSE 250 closed down 210 points at 7,595, and for those that are interested the FTSE Small Caps closed down 25 points at 2,317.

Over the pond, by the time London closed the DJIA was down 109 points at 8,465, the S&P500 down 13 points at 916, and the Nasdaq down half a point at 1,738. The miners and financials all weighing Wall Street down as well.
